Are you ready to walk in the footsteps of great apes? Let’s dive into your day-by-day adventure.
Day 1: Transfer to Kibale Forest & Bigodi Wetland Walk
Drive Time: Approx. 5–6 hours from Entebbe/Kampala
Your journey into the wilds of Uganda begins with a scenic road trip westward toward Kibale Forest National Park, one of Africa’s most diverse and beautiful tropical forests. Along the way, you’ll pass vibrant roadside markets, tea plantations, crater lakes, and glimpses of rural life.
Arrive at your lodge near Kibale in the afternoon and enjoy a relaxed check-in before heading out on a guided walk through the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary in the evening. This community-run project is a hidden gem—teeming with birdlife (including the great blue turaco), primates like black-and-white colobus and red-tailed monkeys, and a variety of butterflies and plant species.
Bigodi is the perfect gentle introduction to Uganda’s biodiversity and a warm-up for tomorrow’s deeper forest exploration.
Overnight: Lodge near Kibale Forest (mid-range or luxury option available)
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Day 2: Full-Day Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Kibale Forest
Rise early for one of the most immersive primate adventures on the continent: the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX). You’ll enter the forest just before sunrise to locate the chimpanzees as they descend from their overnight nests.
Accompanied by experienced Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers and researchers, you’ll spend the entire day tracking and observing a semi-habituated chimpanzee group as they go about their natural routines—feeding, grooming, nesting, and communicating.
Expect to walk long distances on forest trails, often off-path, as you follow the chimp group through their daily movements. This full-day experience offers far greater behavioral insight than typical trekking and is ideal for those passionate about conservation, photography, or animal behavior.
Return to your lodge in the evening, exhausted but enriched by your intimate glimpse into chimpanzee life.
Overnight: Lodge near Kibale Forest
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (packed), Dinner
Day 3: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park & Kazinga Channel Boat Safari
Drive Time: Approx. 2.5–3 hours
After breakfast, begin your journey south to Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda’s most visited savannah park known for its scenic landscapes, tree-climbing lions, elephants, and its incredible birdlife.
Check in to your lodge in the Mweya or Katunguru area and have lunch overlooking the savannah or crater lakes.
In the afternoon, head to Kazinga Channel for a boat cruise that offers close-up sightings of hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes, elephants, and a wide array of aquatic birds such as African fish eagles, pelicans, and kingfishers. This slow cruise along the natural waterway that connects Lake Edward and Lake George is an excellent way to view wildlife from a new perspective.
Overnight: Safari lodge in Queen Elizabeth NP
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4: Morning Game Drive & Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Drive Time: 5–6 hours (with stops)
Start your day with a sunrise game drive in the Kasenyi Plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park, where you’ll have the best chance of spotting lions, Uganda kob, elephants, warthogs, hyenas, and possibly leopards. The early hours offer the highest chances for predator sightings.
After your game drive, begin your scenic transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population. The drive takes you through the Ishasha sector—famous for its tree-climbing lions (optional short game drive)—and then winds into the highland forests of southwestern Uganda.
Arrive at your lodge in the Rushaga or Nkuringo sector in the evening and settle in for the night. Tomorrow brings the highlight of your journey: the Gorilla Habituation Experience.
Overnight: Lodge near Bwindi (Rushaga sector)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5: Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Today you’ll participate in one of Africa’s rarest and most powerful wildlife encounters: the Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHEX). Unlike standard gorilla trekking, which allows just one hour with fully habituated families, this experience gives you up to 4 hours with a semi-habituated gorilla group, guided by trackers and conservationists.
You’ll hike deep into the montane rainforest, following signs of gorilla activity—nests, droppings, footprints—until you locate the group. Once found, you’ll observe them feeding, playing, grooming, and interacting in their natural habitat. Because the group is still becoming accustomed to human presence, their behavior is raw and unrehearsed—giving you an authentic window into their wild world.
The trek can be strenuous, with steep terrain and dense undergrowth, but the rewards are unforgettable. Few people on Earth will ever get this close, for this long, to a wild mountain gorilla.
Overnight: Lodge near Bwindi
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (packed), Dinner
Day 6: Transfer Back to Kampala or Entebbe Airport
Drive Time: 8–9 hours, or optional flight from Kisoro/Kihihi to Entebbe
After breakfast, begin your journey back to Kampala or Entebbe, with lunch en route and optional cultural or souvenir stops depending on time. Alternatively, you can opt for a domestic flight from nearby Kisoro or Kihihi airstrip to Entebbe (recommended for comfort and time-saving).
Arrive in the late afternoon or evening, marking the end of an unforgettable 6-day journey that brought you face-to-face with two of the world’s most iconic great apes and immersed you in Uganda’s rich biodiversity and landscapes.
